When the Unthinkable Happens

Woody! Woody! Woody!

Some days, reality just hits you in the face. Like today.

I realized that there will eventually come a day when Woody Durham, the 37-year-Hall-of-Fame-Voice-of-the-Tar-Heels will no longer be calling Carolina’s games.

While I can’t imagine a game without Woody doing the call, and I hope he works as long as he can, I hope the powers that be at Learfield Sports and the Tar Heel Sports Network have a succession plan in place. Whether they do or not, I have a suggestion for Woody’s eventual replacement.

Mick Mixon.

[Sigh.] I miss Mick. No offense, Jones Angell. But you’re just not Mick. Jones has a sort of everyman quality that I enjoy, but Mick was cool. As in, that cool guy that hangs around with your older brother kind of cool. That aura of confidence, connections, been-there-done-that-and-did-it-better-than-you kind of cool. And he did it with a charisma that was never cocky or conceited. Just cool. Disarmingly funny and charming. And he knew what he was talking about. And now, he’s got professional play-by-play experience with the Panthers.

If we can bring Roy home from Kansas, we can bring Mick back. I don’t care what they have to pay him. Bring back Mick.
