Another Branch on the Tree

David Neal was a class ahead of me at Sanderson High School in Raleigh and was a walk-on guard at UNC. He was one of those guys who would come in at the end of the game and dutifully try to run the offense while everyone in the crowd was yelling for him to just shoot it.

Add another branch to the successful Carolina coaching tree. Former walk-on David Neal has the Apex Cougars on the verge of the 4-A state basketball title.

Neal, who scored nine points over his two-year (1995 and 1996) UNC career, has engineered a remarkable turnaround at Apex this year. The school, which has never been known as a basketball powerhouse, will face East Mecklenburg Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum for the state championship.

Way to go, David!
